Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ is make landfall near Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district on 15th June 2023, at 05:00 p.m. as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm‘ with maximum wind speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A red alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the Saurashtra-Kutch coast due to the impending landfall of the cyclonic storm.

In the meantime, some areas of Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall; these two districts are anticipated to be most affected by the cyclone, which the IMD has classified as “very severe”.

According to a Met statement, a very severe cyclonic storm was near latitude 22.6N and longitude 67.1E at 8:30 am, about 170 km west of Jakhau Port in Gujarat and 210 km west of Devbhumi Dwarka. The storm was expected to cross near Jakhau Port in Gujarat by this evening.

Mrityunjay Mohapatra, director general of India Meteorological Department, stated that sea conditions in the northeast Arabian Sea will remain disturbed today due to cyclone Biparjoy. “All fishing operations should remain suspended. Offshore activities, port and industrial activities, and oil explorations should be regulated today,” he added. Strong winds and heavy rains were experienced in the Saurashtra-Kutch region, according to the Met Department. Biparjoy is likely to have an impact on weather in other states such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Goa. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings about significant damage to temporary housing structures as well as tree and branch falling due to high-speed winds, high tides, and heavy rainfall.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the extremely powerful cyclone will pass through Saurashtra, Kutch, and the nearby Pakistani coasts between Mandvi and Karachi before it reaches the port. Images taken Thursday morning in Gujarat’s Mandvi indicated rough seas. Additionally, there were reports of strong winds in the surrounding area.

The Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat have received a red alert from the IMD, which requests that locals exercise caution and vigilance. Due to the likelihood of significant rainfall, it simultaneously issued orange and yellow alerts for several Rajasthani districts.

  • Meetings have been held to assess readiness for “Biparjoy” by several central ministers, including Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, Rajnath Singh, and Nirmala Sitharaman. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, and Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, are also closely monitoring the weather-related situation.
  • The bad weather has also affected trains in the western region. So far, 76 trains have been canceled, 36 have been delayed, and 31 have been diverted. The Western Railways is also taking various safety and security measures for train passengers in its jurisdictional areas.
  • The following districts in Gujarat state are expected to experience moderate rainfall (5-15 mm/hour) along with light thunderstorms for the next three hours: Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Morbi, Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Kutch. In gusts, the maximum surface wind speed is expected to be less than 40 km/h.

Safety preparations

As Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district, officials evacuated over 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief efforts.

According to a press release from the Gujarat government, out of the total 74,345 people relocated to temporary shelters in eight coastal districts-

  1. almost 34,300 were evacuated in the Kutch district alone
  2. followed by 10,000 in Jamnagar
  3. 5,035 in Devbhumi Dwarka
  4. 9,243 in Morbi
  5. 6,089 in Rajkot
  6. 4,604 in Junagadh
  7. 3,469 in Porbandar district
  8. and 1,605 in Gir Somnath.

As a precautionary measure, teams from the Indian Air Force and Army have also been kept on standby, along with two teams each from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). As many as 187 cyclone shelters have been set up, with power generators installed to ensure power supply if the grid power supply fails.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh evaluated the Armed Forces’ readiness and reaffirmed their commitment to helping civil authorities deal with any situation brought on by “Biparjoy.”
