What is a Loan Against Shares and How Does It Work?

    OliviaBy Olivia03/07/2025Updated:04/07/2025No Comments4 Mins Read

When you need quick access to funds without selling your investments, a Loan Against Shares (LAS) offers a convenient solution. This secured loan allows you to pledge shares. LAS provides immediate liquidity, lower interest costs, and the flexibility to retain long-term investment positions. It’s suitable for financing personal or business needs while maintaining the potential for future gains from the pledged assets.

    Meaning of Loan Against Shares

A Loan Against Shares (LAS) is a secured loan where listed equity shares held in a Demat account are pledged to a bank or financial institution in exchange for a loan. The loan amount is determined based on the market value of the pledged shares, usually ranging between 50% and 70%, depending on the lender’s Loan-to-Value (LTV) policy. The pledged shares remain in the borrower’s name, and dividends or bonuses continue to accrue. However, if the borrower defaults, the lender has the right to sell the pledged shares to recover dues.

    How Does LAS Work?

A Loan Against Shares (LAS) provides a convenient way to access funds by pledging your equity investments as collateral. The process is straightforward and structured to ensure ease and flexibility for the borrower.

    Step 1: Eligibility and Application

To begin, you must hold shares in a Demat account. Once the application is submitted, either online or through an offline channel, the lender reviews your shareholdings and evaluates your eligibility based on approved securities.

Step 2: Loan Sanction and Valuation

The loan amount is determined by the current market value of your shares and the applicable Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio, which typically goes up to 50%. This amount is sanctioned and linked to an overdraft account. Loan limits may vary depending on the lender’s policy and the quality of the securities.

    Step 3: Disbursement and Usage

Once approved, the funds are made available in the overdraft account. You can withdraw as needed, with no restrictions on end-use except for speculative activities. Common uses include business expenses, healthcare costs, education, and personal needs. The pledged shares remain in your Demat account, but the lender holds the rights until repayment is complete.

    Step 4: Repayment

In LAS, through an overdraft, interest is charged only on the amount used and for the time it’s used, with flexible principal repayment and regular interest payments. In a term loan, repayment is done through fixed EMIs or as per the agreed schedule.

    Step 5: Release of Securities

Once the entire loan is repaid, the lien on the pledged shares is removed, making them freely available in your Demat account.

This structure makes LAS a cost-effective and flexible financing option for those with market investments.

Benefits of a Loan Against Shares

Loan Against Shares offers multiple advantages for investors who wish to leverage the value of their portfolio without selling it:

    • Retain Ownership: You continue to earn dividends or interest on the pledged shares and benefit from any market appreciation.
    • Quick Access to Funds: Loans are processed faster due to minimal documentation and simple valuation procedures.
    • Flexible Usage: There are generally no end-use restrictions, allowing funds to be used for personal or business needs (except speculative activities).
    • Lower Interest Rates: As it is a secured loan, Loan Against Securities interest rates are generally lower than unsecured personal loans.

Eligibility Criteria for Loan Against Shares

Eligibility varies among lenders, but generally includes:

    • Minimum Age: The applicant must be 18 years or above.
    • Resident Status: Indian citizens or residents; some lenders may also consider NRIs.
    • Demat Account: You must hold the securities in Demat format with the lender or a recognised depository.
    • Permanent Income: Individuals should have a steady source of income or a stable set of assets.
    • Credit Profile: While the loan is secured, a reasonable credit score is often required to access suitable terms.
    • Minimum Portfolio Value: Some lenders require a minimum pledged value.

    Conclusion

A Loan Against Shares is a practical financing option that allows you to meet immediate liquidity needs without selling your investments. It combines the benefits of lower interest rates, quick access to funds, and continued ownership of assets. Whether you need capital for personal needs, business expansion, or unforeseen expenses, LAS offers a smart way to use your financial portfolio as leverage. However, borrowers should be cautious of market fluctuations and maintain the required margin to avoid the liquidation of securities. With responsible usage, LAS can be an efficient tool for short-term funding while keeping your investment intact.
