Ramadan Calendar 2023

Ramadan is one of five central pillars, or duties, in Islam. It commemorates the time when Muhammad first received divine revelations from Allah during his career as a prophet. It lasts between twenty-nine and thirty days from the first sighting of a crescent moon to the next.

Muslims observe Roza, or fasting, during the holy month of Ramadan by abstaining from food and drinks. The sehri meal, which is consumed before sunrise, marks the start of the fast for all Muslims who observe Roza. They break their fast during the iftar or evening meal. Dinner has to be consumed only after sunset.

The Holy month of Ramadan acts as a test of discipline and self-control. It is believed to increase “taqwa,” or God-consciousness, and to cleanse the body and the soul by eliminating vices and desires. Muslims seek Allah’s blessings through the observance of Roza. Muslims make charitable contributions at the end of the month of Ramadan. These contributions must be made before Eid festivities can begin.

Eid is a joyous occasion when Muslims congregate to offer special prayers, exchange gifts, and enjoy meals with family members. It signifies the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan.
