What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a scheme of the government of India, which was introduced under Narendra Modi’s government on 25 June 2015.

The main motive of this scheme is to address the urban housing shortage among the EWS/LIG. Under this project, affordable houses will be provided to the urban poor people with a target of building 2 crore affordable houses by 31 March 2022.

This scheme is converged with other schemes of the government of India to ensure houses with a proper latrine system, a proper supply of electricity which was under the Saubhagya scheme, and a proper facility of gas or LPG connection under the Ujjwala Yojana, with also access to pure drinking water.

This scheme is divided into two sections based on the area it serves, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin(PMAY-G) or Rural.

The features of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are that the government will provide an interest of 6.5% (for EWS and LIG), 4% for MIG-I, and 3% for MIG-II. The houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana would be constructed through eco-friendly technology.
