India launched its Chandrayaan-3 mission on Friday 14 July 2023, primarily aiming to complete a successful soft landing on the moon. Chandrayaan, which means “moon vehicle” in Sanskrit, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:35 PM (IST). More than 1 million viewers tuned in to YouTube to watch the historic launch in addition to the massive crowds that gathered at the space center. If successful, India will join the former Soviet Union, the United States, and China as the fourth nation in the world to perform a soft landing on the moon. In this article, we discuss the latest updates to Chandrayaan 3—from its live location, online tracker, current status, and much more. So, keep reading!

About Chandrayaan 3

India’s third envisioned lunar exploration mission is ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission. This mission, which is a follow-up to Candrayaan-2, aims to demonstrate end-to-end capability for secure landing and roving on the lunar surface. Three components make up the 3,900-kilogram Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft: a lander, a rover, and a propulsion unit. Although the rover is similar to the one used in Chandrayaan-2, ISRO asserts that upgrades have been made to increase the landing’s safety.
The propulsion module is going to propel the lander and rover into a 100 km lunar orbit. The Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth (SHAPE) payload, which is also carried by the module, will be used to study the spectral and polarimetric measurements of Earth from the lunar orbit. The Lander is intended to make a soft touchdown at a specific lunar location. The rover and several scientific tools will be transported there for on-site analysis.
Chandrayaan 3 live status

The fourth orbit-raising maneuver was completed successfully by the spacecraft on Thursday, July 20 between 2:00 and 3:30 PM IST, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This is the fourth of several orbit-raising maneuvers before the spacecraft enters a lunar orbit. The next firing will occur on July 25, 2023, between 2:00 and 3:30 IST. This will place the spacecraft in its fifth and final orbit.
The Moon is typically located 384,400 kilometers from Earth on average. To save fuel, Chandrayaan-3 will take a longer route to Earth’s lone satellite. With that trajectory, the mission’s Vikram lander should soft-land on the Moon’s South Pole region in about 42 days from launch, or around August 23 or 24.
Chandrayaan 3 live video
Chandrayaan 3 was launched on 14 July 2023 from Sriharikota. It was such a proud moment for every Indian. A massive crowd gathered at Satish Dhawan Space Center to witness this moment. The spacecraft launch was telecasted “LIVE” on both government and private television channels. These include the official ISRO YouTube Channel, National TV, Aaj Tak, DD, Indian Express, and many more. However, if you missed the moment, you can watch the live video of the Chandrayaan 3 launch on the official Indian Space Research Organisation website. Chandrayaan 3 live updates
According to ISRO, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully completed its fourth orbit-raising maneuver on Thursday, July 20. Furthermore, the space agency verified its modified orbital parameters. The spacecraft will be 233 kilometers from Earth at the closest point in its most recent orbit. And 71,351 kilometers away at its farthest. The next maneuver is scheduled to happen between 2 and 3 PM IST on July 25.
Earlier, the third orbit-raising maneuver, which took place between 2:00 and 3:30 PM IST on Tuesday, July 18, was successful, according to ISRO. Currently orbiting Earth, the spacecraft will be 228 kilometers above the planet at its closest approach and 51,400 kilometers away at its farthest. The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully completed its second orbit-raising maneuver, placing it in a 41603 km x 226 km orbit around the Earth on 16 July. And, the first orbit-raising maneuver was carried out on Saturday 15 July 2023. Also, according to ISRO’s tweets, the spacecraft’s condition was “normal”.

LVM3 managed to put Chandrayaan-3 in the right orbit around the Earth. But that is just one part of its mission: now it has to do some real work. The spacecraft will now perform several orbit-raising maneuvers that will progressively enlarge the eccentricity of its orbit around the planet. It will enter an Earth-to-Moon transfer orbit once it is at the proper separation from the planet. After that, the gravity of the Moon will pull it in.
Then it will start manipulating its lunar orbit to get closer and closer to the natural satellite. The Vikram lander module will separate from the orbiter component once it reaches a 100-kilometer orbit. Vikram will scan the landing area from orbit while the orbiter will scan the lunar surface. If everything goes as planned, Vikram will then start deboosting procedures to get closer to the Moon’s surface before landing safely. After a successful landing, the Pragyan rover will be set up on the lunar surface by the Vikram lander.

According to P Veeramuthuvel, project director of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, Chandrayaan has several crucial events planned, including earth-bound maneuvers, entry into the lunar orbit, separation of the lander, a set of deboost maneuvers, and a power descent phase for a soft landing. However, if successful, India will join the former Soviet Union, the United States, and China as the fourth nation in the world to perform a soft landing on the moon. Before making a successful Moon landing, both the Soviet Union and the United States lost numerous spacecraft in crashes. China was the only country to complete the Chang’e-3 mission successfully on its first attempt.
The reports of India’s lunar mission, with in-depth information, will be released by ISRO on July 14 or later. The specifics involve the analytical data that will be made accessible to everyone by the Indian Space Research Organisation. The reports include the necessary details about the Rover’s Moon landing. The vehicle will most likely make a soft landing somewhere near the Moon’s South Pole. The rover will investigate minerals, water, and ice. India may benefit from this given that the South Pole is the less traversed location.
Bottom Line
The Soviet Union took the first step on the moon in 1959, with Luna 1. It resulted in a hard landing on the moon. However, with the failure of the Chandrayaan 2 mission, our ISRO scientists learned a lot and implement all that learning to achieve a successful safe landing on the moon this time. The Mark 3(LVM3) was designed to minimize the possibility of the Rover being deliberately crashed onto the moon. With Chandrayaan 3, India’s interest in space exploration and desire to advance its technological and scientific knowledge are both evident. We hope and wish good luck to ISRO for a safe landing on the moon. So that India’s moon landing will go down in history books for all of us.
