Title: History, Origin and Myth of Saree

    OliviaBy Olivia30/07/2025No Comments6 Mins Read

Saree – a single 6 yard unstitched cloth, which is ruling the world of fashion, even today, has a great history. Did you anything think about who has weaved the first saree or who is the first women on the earth who has worn the first saree? It can be pretty tough for anyone to answer this question. There are so many varieties of outfits available in India, but the most commonly used and accepted outfit all over India is definitely a Saree. There can be a different style of draping a saree in each region or state, but saree is common.

This is just a single piece of garment, which has to be worn according to your culture and style. Sarees are generally six yards in length, but sometimes, depending the style of wearing a saree, it can be nine yards as well. Even after being so lengthy, it is chosen by most of the Indian women for all kinds of occasions. You have different kinds of sarees for parties, for daily wear, for festivals and something really grand and extraordinary for the Indian brides as well. Whatever is the occasion, saree adds more elegance and glamor to the women and hence you may sometimes don’t need any ornaments as well. Just the saree alone is going to make you look stunning.

It’s been ages that saree has come into existence, but still, the demand for sarees has never gone down. The reason sarees are so special is the simplicity and the comfort that you can enjoy when you wear a saree.

The entire world todays recognizes Saree as a style statement of the Indian Women. How does a saree look like? You can find a saree in simple cotton material, some elegant Chiffon or georgette material or you can find them in Shimmering Silk material as well. You will have some grand wedding collection with some detailed embroidery in golden threads, silk threads and also in silver threads as well. You can choose the colors also of your own choice. You need not have to worry about the price as well, you get sarees which suit the budget of everyone and very mood as well. It all depends on your patience to select the best one that suits your mood and budget, from such huge collection.

You will get an amazing look when you are wearing a saree and this is something which can be worn by women of any size as well. This is an unstitched garment and can suit all sizes. If you are experienced in wearing a saree, then you can try different styles of draping this wonderful piece of unstitched garment. You should choose the right color, design, pattern based on your age, region and occasion as well.

This is the only garment, which remained the same for ages and it is still the same. No changes made to the way it looks like, it is just the varieties in which it is available has changed according to the demands of the present generations like big border, heavy work, plain saree, cotton sarees, different fabrics for comfort, etc. You will find it really difficult to find some so feminine. It is going to make you look simple and coy, FAB and just traditional. Now, make some minute changes to it like using a modern blouse, changing the Pallu wearing style and you can get a modern look with the same age old traditional attire. Not even the present day modern and western dresses can give you this look. You can get that CHIC like look even when you are covering yourself from top to toe. That is the beauty of this saree.

You cannot find one single garment, which can look good on women of all body shapes and sizes – tall, short, thin or fat. But this is something that can fill in that gap. Any women can try a saree, but it all depends on the fabric of the saree. You can drap the saree around your body and then pleat it in the front and then place the Pallu on your left shoulder. The part of the saree, which is left loose and placed in the left shoulder usually (can be worn right side also, depending on your comfort) is called as the Pallu. Generally, when you pick up a saree, you will see that the Pallu part plays a very important role. You will have the grand embroidery or designs on the Pallu part usually. A saree is in the market for 5000 years and will continue the same, and that is just because of its simplicity.

When coming to draping a saree, you have different religions and cultures in India and they follow different styles of draping a saree.

    Have a look a few of them…

    Maharastrian Style:

As discussed earlier, the length of the saree is usually six yards, but sometimes it can also be nine yards, depending on the style of draping it. When you are trying Maharastrian style of draping, then you need a nine yard saree. You don’t need a petticoat, as the saree itself is draped in a pant style.

    The South Indian Style:

In almost all the South Indian states, you see that the saree is draped around the body and the pleats are placed at the front. Now the Pallu is usually over the left should only. The most popular South Indian sarees are Silk Saree. South Indians go for a Silk saree for any kind of grand events like weddings, festivals and almost everything.

    The Bengali Style:

The style of Bengali women is completely different. They wear the saree in the usual way, but when it comes to Pallu, it falls from their shoulders towards the front side, and not back.

    Coorgi Style:

This is a different style of saree, where you don’t need a Blouse. It is just the saree draped with pleats in the front.

    The Most Popular Gujarati Style:

This is also almost the same way, you drape the saree around the body and the Pallu is brought to the front from the right side and again tucked at the backside of the waist. For a different look, you can try the Pallu over the left shoulder as well.
