    • Highest-Paid Athletes in the World 2024
    • Final Thoughts on Money in Sports

From brand endorsement deals to contracts running into millions of dollars, the financial aspect of sports shows how much top performing athletes are valued. It also shows that these highest-paid athletes are not only breaking records in their craft, but making huge strides off-field too.

According to Evelyn Balyton, an expert in sports and iGaming, “these individuals have proven their worth and impacted the world of sports in multiple ways. Hence, they deserve the global recognition being given to them.”

Top 10 Highest Paid Athletes in History

We explore the details of the world’s highest-paid athletes in this section, with attention drawn to their off-field earnings and contributions.

    Michael Jordan – $3.75bn

Few athletes have ever reached the iconic status of Michael Jordan. His Airness not only changed the game of basketball but also set a new standard in athlete endorsements. According to Forbes, he’s “a cultural phenomenon” and his influence on the NBA will not be forgotten for a long time to come.

Among others, the legendary Nike deal of 1984, which led to the Air Jordan line, remains one of the most successful endorsements in sports history. Till date, the partnership generates annual revenue for the icon and way more than his salary as a player, showing how far a strong personal brand can take an athlete.

    Tiger Woods – $2.66bn

“I don’t believe that human beings can achieve success in golf or life without courage,” – Tiger Woods.

Without doubt, Tiger’s name making this list would give golf fans something to be proud of. However, like Jordan, the 15-time major champion didn’t make it to this list through tour cash prizes. Rather, his deals with major brands such as Nike, Gillette, and Bridgestone places him second on the list of the top paid athletes in the world.

With 20+ years in pro golf, one can say Woods’ consistency paid off quite well and could be used to inspire upcoming stars. Stars like Spanish Golfer Jon Rahm who joined the LIV Golf tours in 2023 is greatly influenced by Woods. Till date, Woods still commands huge commercial appeal and why he has already refused to participate in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf in December where he could have earned more than $700m in performance and bonuses, many brands are still paying him heavily.

    Cristiano Ronaldo – $1.92bn

A product of hardwork and sheer love for the game of football is the third man on this list of highest-paid athletes.

The Portuguese striker and former Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo is referred to by many of his supporters as the Greatest of All-time (GOAT). Currently plying his trade at Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr, the 39-year-old footballer earns $260 million per year making him one of the richest soccer players alive.

Following his 2022 move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Ronaldo has always been around the top in the list of the world’s highest-paid athletes. However, just about $198 million – $200 million of his income is generated from his on-field earnings in the Saudi Pro League, and the rest are from sponsorship deals. Some of the brands he represents include Binance, Nike, Clear and his personal creation CR7.

    Arnold Palmer – $1.76bn

Arnold Palmer was not only a golf icon but a marketing mastermind according to multiple sources.

Prominently known as “The King” of golf, Arnold Palmer pioneered sports endorsements in the 1960s, partnering with brands like Coca-Cola and Cadillac. He was brand ambassador for the Lincoln-Mercury Sports Panel in the early 1970s and eventually went on to acquire a dealership after his name. The Arnold Palmer Motors with its base in Latrobe served for 36 years until 2017 when it closed down.

Palmer holds the 5th all-time record of PGA Tour wins (62) and his ventures in professional sports, business and branding so far is one to be emulated.

    LeBron James – $1.7bn

The famous NBA player rounds out the top five of the world’s 10 highest-paid athletes in history. He’s one of the two athletes in basketball currently labeled the most influential by NBA fans. While the other, Stephen Curry is a sensation too, based on financial portfolio, LeBron James sits higher.

The American who’s found a way to maintain the balance between sports and entertainment has a number of side deals including film appearances. Notable mentions are the likes of Space Jam and Shooting Stars which stars LeBron James as an actual basketballer.

In wages, the Lakers power forward has an annual income ranging from $60-90 million. However,  partnership deals secure him over $1 billion yearly, making him highly marketable.

    Jack Nicklaus – $1.67bn

Nicknamed ‘the Golden Bear’, Jack William Nicklaus is a retired American pro golfer. Third on the all-time table of PGA tour wins (73), his expertise on the course was outstanding. Hence, its no surprise he earned his place among the Big Three of the 90s together with Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

Most importantly though, his ability to amass wealth as a sportsman is appreciated and puts him on the world’s top 10. However, the sources of his income are more diversified than many players on the list. Nicklaus’ tentacles reached as far as creating golf course designs, writing instructional books and selling golf equipment, among others.

    Lionel Messi – $1.67bn

”They tell me that all men are equal in God’s eyes, this player makes you seriously think about those words.” – Ray Hudson.

Record eight times Ballon d’Or award winner, Lionel Messi boasts of a whooping $1.67 billion in annual revenue. As at May, 2024, his base salary ranges between $12-20 million at USA Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, an average pay the former Barcelona star seems contended with.

Many of his supporters would wish he answered the call of the UAE-based teams after fat checks were assigned to fellow top players including Neymar and Karim Benzema. Both mentioned earn between 70 million to 100 million Euros per season, more than twice Messi’s pay in the MLS.

However, the Argentine seems unfazed, as he enjoys the endorsement benefits of big brands like Pepsi, Adidas and Apple, covering up most of his annual revenue.

    David Beckham – $1.5bn

Englishman David Beckham is a global sports and style icon. The former England Captain with 19 major trophies to his name as a player was ranked among the highest earners in football. Then, following his retirement in 2013, he progressed to make significant strides in business.

Beckham’s unique ability to blend sports and fashion helped his influence grow beyond the soccer field. Hence,  he was able to land impressive deals with top brands like Adidas, H&M, Haig Club and a long-term ambassadorship deal with UNICEF.

He is currently the President and Co-owner of Inter Miami CF while also holding a stake in English League Two team Salford City.

    Roger Federer – $1.49bn

Former Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer is the only tennis player on this list. Retired in 2020, Federer enjoyed an outstanding career on the court. Of course, his records, wins and awards definitely played a part in his earning level, but there was more to it.

Federer was featured in a couple of memorable ads and had to its contracts a number of endorsement deals. Notable ones include those of Rolex,  Nike, Uniqlo, Mercedes-Benz and Switzerland’s largest telecom company, Sunrise.

To mark the end of a successful career, a documentary film of his last 12 months was released in 2024 on Amazon Prime Video.

    Floyd Mayweather – $1.48bn

Highly recognized for his unmatched record and flamboyant lifestyle, Mayweather has made a fortune primarily from his pay-per-view fights. One of these fights includes the famous bout against Manny Pacquiao where he took home $180 million.

His professional boxing statistics over 50 recorded fights is at 50 wins, 0 losses (27 KOs and 23 by decision). He actively competed between 1996-2017 when he retired with an undefeated record and 15 major world championships. The boxer remains one of the most lucrative sporting attractions based on pay-per-view, topping Forbes list of highest-paid athletes five times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018).

Floyd Mayweather continues to earn through exhibition matches and brand promotions through his personal firm, Mayweather Promotions.
