Residents in coastal regions were advised to remain indoors as the cyclone approached the land. For the first time in 25 years, the Gujarat coast is bracing for a cyclone in June. According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast, the Biparjoy Cyclone will be just the fifth cyclone of the “severe” (wind speed of 48 to 63 km/hr) or higher category to pass through Gujarat.
Authorities stopped fishing on Monday, sent out rescuers, and made evacuation announcements for those in danger.
Cyclone Biparjoy, which was earlier predicted to hit the coast of Pakistan, has now altered course and is expected to make landfall in Gujarat on June 15.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Biparjoy is very likely to become an “extremely severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours” and cross Saurashtra and Kutch by Thursday. According to a bulletin from the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) in India, the weather disturbance could cause extensive damage to standing crops as well as damage to homes, roads, railways, powerlines, and signaling systems. Biparjoy to Hit Gujarat as ‘Very Severe’ Cyclone

Biparjoy Cyclone is very likely to move nearly northward until June 14 morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjacent Pakistan coasts between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi near Jakhau port by noon of June 15 as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained windspeed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph.” stated IMD.
However, the extremely dangerous cyclone that is forming in the Arabian Sea is predicted to weaken somewhat and be downgraded to a “very severe cyclonic storm” by the time it makes landfall in Gujarat.
Heavy Rain and thunderstorms in Gujarat for 5 days
Gujarat will experience thunderstorms and strong winds from the cyclone, which is expected to pass between 200 and 300 km from the Porbandar coast. According to the weather office, Saurashtra and Kutch will likely experience heavy to very heavy rain on June 14 and extremely heavy rain on June 15. This will also lead to a fall in temperature by 4-6 degrees Celsius in Gujarat.
Biparjoy disrupts train and flight schedule
According to Western Railways, at least 56 trains have been canceled yesterday in Gujarat’s Cyclone Biparjoy-affected areas. As of today, 95 trains will continue to be canceled due to Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to become a “very severe cyclonic storm” on June 15.
State Government Prepares for Biparjoy Cyclone
The effects of the Biparjoy Cyclone have already started appearing in the form of high waves and strong winds along the coastlines. Authorities already deployed rescuers and evacuation plans are in place.
“The cyclone is moving towards us. So, everybody prays that should it hit (Gujarat), then it passes off causing minimum damage. If it does not hit Gujarat, nothing like it. But as of now, possibilities are there that it may hit (Gujarat),” Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated.
The government of Gujarat has shut down three popular sea beaches—Shivrajpur near Dwarka, Chowpaty in Porbandar, and Mandvi in Kutch district. Fishermen have been requested to cease all fishing until June 15. The local administration in the affected districts has also been urged to make plans for the evacuation of residents.
As the cyclonic storm Biparjoy was anticipated to cross Jakhau Port by the evening of June 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Kutch and Saurashtra coasts in Gujarat today. Evacuation efforts will ramp up as cyclone Biparjoy approaches and are predicted to make landfall close to Jakhau port in the Kutch district off the coast of Gujarat. The government is aiming to evacuate people within 10 kilometers of the coast. Authorities have started the process of relocating those who live close to the coast in the coastal districts of Kutch, Porbandar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Junagadh, and Morbi.
Also, Union home minister Amit Shah will chair a meeting at 3 pm today to discuss the government’s preparations for cyclone Biparjoy. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, and representatives from eight districts that may be impacted will also attend the meeting virtually.
